DIRECTION SENSE TEST
CSAT
Direction Sense Test is an easy but scoring topic in CSAT logical reasoning. Questions test an aspirant’s ability to understand directions, turns, and distances while mentally visualising movement. Errors usually occur not due to difficulty but due to confusion and lack of systematic approach.
BASIC DIRECTIONS
Four Main Directions
• North (N)
• South (S)
• East (E)
• West (W)
Key Facts
• East is to the right of North
• West is to the left of North
• North and South are opposite directions
• East and West are opposite directions
INTERMEDIATE DIRECTIONS
• North-East (NE)
• North-West (NW)
• South-East (SE)
• South-West (SW)
Angle Concept
• Angle between two adjacent directions = 45 degrees
• Angle between opposite directions = 180 degrees
TURNS AND ROTATIONS
Right Turn
• 90 degree turn clockwise
Left Turn
• 90 degree turn anticlockwise
About Turn
• 180 degree turn
CSAT Tip
• Always track turns step by step
STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO SOLVE DIRECTION QUESTIONS
Step 1
• Assume starting direction clearly
Step 2
• Draw a rough diagram or use hand movement
Step 3
• Mark each turn carefully
Step 4
• Calculate final direction or distance
DISTANCE CALCULATION IN DIRECTION QUESTIONS
Concept
• Movement may be in straight or right-angle paths
Approach
• Use simple addition or subtraction
• Apply Pythagoras theorem when needed (right angle)
SHADOW BASED DIRECTION QUESTIONS (BASIC IDEA)
Morning
• Sun in East → shadow in West
Afternoon
• Sun in West → shadow in East
CSAT Tip
• Face the sun to identify directions
PRACTICE QUESTIONS
Question 1
A person starts facing North, walks 10 m, turns right and walks 5 m, then turns right again and walks 10 m. In which direction is he from the starting point?
Question 2
A man walks 20 m towards South, then turns left and walks 10 m, then turns left again and walks 20 m. How far and in which direction is he from the starting point?
Question 3
If a person faces the rising sun and turns left, which direction is he facing now?
