GROUP OF SEVEN (G7)

International Relation

INTRODUCTION
The Group of Seven, popularly known as G7, is an informal forum of the world’s advanced economies that discusses global economic stability, security issues and major international challenges. For beginners in International Relations, G7 helps in understanding how developed countries coordinate their policies and influence global economic governance. From an OPSC prelims perspective, G7 is a static topic with repeated questions on membership, origin, nature and relevance.

• Originated in 1975 as G6 after the oil crisis and global economic slowdown
• Canada joined in 1976, making it G7
• Russia joined in 1998, forming G8
• Russia was suspended in 2014, reverting the group back to G7
• Formed to allow informal dialogue among major industrialised nations
