JOB PROFILE OF ODISHA POLICE SERVICE (OPS)

Designation

Officers begin their careers as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) after completing their training.

Responsibilities

  • Law Enforcement : Ensuring law and order in urban and rural areas.
  • Crime Prevention and Investigation : Conducting investigations, gathering intelligence, and implementing preventive crime measures.
  • Community Policing : Building positive relationships with communities to improve trust and prevent crime.
  • Specialized Assignments : Officers may serve in specialized units like the Special Operations Group (SOG), Crime Branch, Anti Naxal Operations, and the Economic Offenses Wing.

Pay Structure

  •       Starting Salary : The starting salary for a DSP in the Odisha Police Service falls within  Pay Level 12  under the 7th Pay Commission, with a starting basic pay of approximately  ₹56,100  per month, exclusive of allowances.
  •       Allowances : Officers receive Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Travel Allowance (TA), and other special allowances depending on posting and seniority.
  •       Other Benefits : OPS officers enjoy benefits such as medical facilities, official accommodation, transportation, and retirement benefits.

Work Responsibilities

  • Public Safety and Order : Managing daily law enforcement duties to ensure public safety.
  • Investigations : Overseeing and conducting investigations into serious crimes, financial frauds, and organized crime.
  • Crowd Control and Crisis Management : Maintaining order during festivals, protests, processions, and political gatherings.
  • Coordination with Civil Administration : Working with district and state officials on emergency responses, including disaster relief.
  • Training and Discipline : Ensuring training, discipline, and welfare of subordinate police personnel.

Promotional Hierarchy

   Promotion in OPS is based on experience, seniority, and performance. The hierarchy generally follows this path:

  • Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) : Entry level rank, responsible for police operations in designated jurisdictions.
  • Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) : Promotion typically occurs after 5 7 years, with added administrative and operational duties.
  • Superintendent of Police (SP) : After about 10 12 years, officers are eligible for the rank of SP, where they oversee a district or specialized unit.
  • Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) / Deputy Inspector General (DIG) : With seniority, officers reach this level, overseeing multiple districts or divisions within Odisha Police.
  • Inspector General of Police (IG) : A senior role, often achieved after 20+ years of service, involving state level responsibilities.
  • Promotion to IPS : Exceptional OPS officers may be promoted to the Indian Police Service (IPS), based on merit, eligibility, and available vacancies.
