International Translation Day 2025

What’s the News?
- International Translation Day is observed globally on September 30 each year to recognize the vital contributions of translators, interpreters, and terminologists in connecting nations and fostering mutual understanding.
- The 2025 theme is “Celebrating Translation, Peace and Trust”, which underscores the critical role of human expertise in ensuring trustworthy communication, especially in diplomatic, humanitarian, and multilingual contexts.
- The theme also emphasizes the need for human oversight of AI-generated translations and reaffirms the importance of ethical, accurate, and culturally sensitive translation practices in an era of rapid technological advancement.
Theme Focus: Translation, Peace and Trust
- The 2025 observance highlights how professional translators contribute to:
- Building dialogue between conflicting parties.
- Strengthening trust in international relations and global institutions.
- Safeguarding linguistic diversity, particularly for Indigenous languages.
- It aligns with the United Nations General Assembly’s Resolution declaring 2025 as the “Year of Peace and Trust”, reinforcing translation as a tool for conflict prevention and diplomacy.
- A key sub-theme, “Translation, shaping a future you can trust”, reflects concerns about the reliability of machine translation and the irreplaceable value of human judgment and cultural fluency.
Additional Info
- Historical Context:
- The date, September 30, marks the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is regarded as the patron saint of translators.
- He is renowned for translating most of the Bible into Latin, a version known as the Vulgate, making it accessible to a wider audience.
- Establishment and Recognition:
- The International Federation of Translators (FIT), an international grouping of translator associations, established the day in 1953.
- In 1991, FIT launched the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day to promote the profession globally.
- On May 24, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognised the day by adopting Resolution A/RES/71/288, acknowledging the role of professional translation in "connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development."
- Translation at the United Nations:
- The UN is one of the world's largest employers of language professionals.
- Official documents are issued simultaneously in the six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish, which is made possible by the work of UN translators.

Over 6 Lakh Stolen Mobile Phones Recovered Under Sanchar Saathi Initiative

What’s the News?
- The Sanchar Saathi initiative, launched by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communications, has facilitated the recovery of over 6 lakh lost or stolen mobile phones across India.
- The initiative empowers citizens to block and trace their stolen devices using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, significantly reducing the resale value of stolen phones and deterring mobile theft.
- As of October 2025, more than 1.26 crore IMEI numbers have been verified through the platform, and over 10 lakh suspicious devices have been identified and blocked for non-compliance with regulatory standards.
Sanchar Saathi: Key Components and Impact
- CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register):
- Allows users to report lost/stolen phones using their IMEI number.
- Enables remote blocking of devices across all telecom networks in India, rendering them unusable.
- Facilitates unblocking if the device is recovered.
- Know Your Mobile Connections:
- Lets citizens view all mobile connections registered under their Aadhaar number.
- Helps detect and disconnect unauthorized or fraudulent SIMs.
- Check IMEI:
- Verifies whether a mobile device’s IMEI is genuine and compliant with DoT standards.
- Flags cloned, counterfeit, or non-compliant devices.
- Impact Metrics:
- 6,00,000+ stolen phones recovered.
- 10,00,000+ non-compliant/suspicious devices blocked.
- 1.26 crore IMEI verifications conducted.
Additional Info
- Sanchar Saathi Launch:

RBI Mandates Enhanced Authentication for Digital Payments from 2026
![]()
What’s the News?
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued the “Reserve Bank of India (Authentication Mechanisms for Digital Payment Transactions) Directions, 2025”, which will come into effect from April 1, 2026.
- These directions mandate stricter, risk-based authentication protocols for all domestic digital payment transactions, going beyond the existing two-factor authentication (2FA) framework.
- The move aims to enhance security, reduce fraud, and leverage technological advancements such as biometrics, tokenisation, and behavioural analytics while ensuring interoperability and customer protection.
Key Provisions of the New Authentication Framework
- Dynamic Authentication Requirement:
- At least one authentication factor must be dynamically generated or proven, i.e., unique to each transaction (e.g., OTP, biometric token).
- Compromise of one factor must not affect the reliability of the other.
- Risk-Based Additional Checks:
- Payment system participants may deploy contextual and behavioural parameters—such as transaction location, device fingerprint, user history, and spending patterns—to assess fraud risk and trigger extra verification layers.
- Cross-Border Transactions:
- Card issuers must validate an Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA) for non-recurring, card-not-present (CNP) international transactions when requested by overseas merchants or acquirers.
- Consumer Safeguards:
- In case of losses due to non-compliance with these directions, issuers must compensate customers in full without demur.
- All systems must comply with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
Additional Info
- Current Authentication Landscape:
- India’s digital payments ecosystem has primarily relied on SMS-based OTPs as the second factor, alongside static credentials like PINs or passwords.
- The new framework does not eliminate SMS OTPs but encourages diversification into more secure, dynamic methods.
- Regulatory Context:
- The directions follow public consultations on draft guidelines issued in July 2024 (on alternative authentication) and February 2025 (on cross-border AFA).
- Aligns with RBI’s broader “Security, Convenience, and Innovation” triad for digital payments.
- Stakeholder Response:
- Industry bodies like the Payments Council of India have welcomed the flexibility and clarity, noting it will accelerate adoption of biometrics, tokenisation, and AI-driven fraud detection.
- Applicability:
- Covers all Payment System Providers (PSPs) and Participants, including banks and non-bank entities, for all domestic digital transactions.
