Astronomers Discover Hidden Magnetic Threads Above the Sun

What’s the News?
- An international research team led by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) has discovered intricate, thread-like magnetic structures above the Sun’s relatively inactive regions using the Sunrise-III solar observatory.
- The findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, reveal that even the Sun’s seemingly quiet regions contain complex magnetic networks.
- The discovery provides new insights into solar atmospheric heating and energy transfer from the Sun’s surface to its outer layers.
Magnetic Threads and Solar Canopy?
- Location: Detected in the Sun’s chromosphere, situated above the visible solar surface (photosphere).
- Magnetic Canopy: A network formed when magnetic field lines concentrated at the photosphere spread outward and arch upward into the chromosphere.
- Findings:
- The magnetic canopy contains numerous narrow, elongated magnetic threads rather than uniformly expanding magnetic fields.
- Computer simulations suggest that twisting motions on the solar surface produce these structures.
- Some threads exhibit magnetic polarity opposite to surrounding fields, potentially enabling magnetic reconnection and energy release.
- Quiet-Sun Regions: Areas without prominent sunspots, covering most of the Sun’s surface and generally possessing weaker magnetic fields than active regions.
Sunrise-III Solar Observatory?
- Project: International balloon-borne solar observation mission.
- Mission Year: 2024.
- Operating Altitude: Approximately 35 km above Earth in the stratosphere.
- Telescope: 1-metre solar telescope carried by a high-altitude balloon.
- Instrument: Sunrise Chromospheric Infrared spectroPolarimeter (SCIP).
- Developed under NAOJ leadership.
- Uses near-infrared spectropolarimetry to measure magnetic fields across the photosphere and chromosphere.
- Advantage: Minimises atmospheric interference, enabling high-resolution observations of weak solar magnetic fields.
Significance of the Discovery?
- Solar Atmospheric Heating: Helps investigate how magnetic energy travels upward and contributes to heating the chromosphere and corona.
- Magnetic Reconnection: Oppositely directed magnetic fields may reconnect, converting magnetic energy into thermal energy.
- Solar Spicules: Sunrise-III also mapped magnetic fields within narrow jets of solar material and observed how their distribution changes with altitude.
- Solar Physics: Provides observational evidence for improving models of magnetic-field evolution and energy transport in the solar atmosphere.
Additional Info
Layers of the Solar Atmosphere:
- Photosphere: Visible surface of the Sun, approximately 5,500°C.
- Chromosphere: Layer above the photosphere, containing dynamic plasma and magnetic structures.
- Corona: Outermost atmospheric layer, reaching temperatures exceeding 1 million°C.
Solar Spicules:
- Narrow, short-lived jets of plasma extending upward from the solar surface.
- Considered potential channels for transporting energy into the upper solar atmosphere.
National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ):
- Japan's national astronomical research institution.
- Operates under the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS).
