Over 2.82 Crore Houses Completed Under PMAY-G
What’s the News?
- Under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), more than 2.82 crore rural houses have been completed so far.
- A total of 3.85 crore houses have been sanctioned out of 4.12 crore houses allocated to States and UTs under the scheme.
- The scheme’s cumulative allocation target has been revised upward: from initial targets to 4.95 crore houses under its extension to FY 2028-29.
PMAY-G: Progress, Strategy & Challenges
- Objectives & Strategy
- Provide pucca houses with basic amenities (kitchen, toilet, etc.) to eligible rural households, especially those without homes or in kutcha houses.
- Use technology and transparency tools — Awaas+ app, geo-tagging, AI/ML fraud detection, Aadhaar-based DBT, real-time dashboards — to monitor progress and reduce leakages.
- Leverage convergence with schemes like MGNREGS to provide person-day employment during house construction.
- Scale & Numbers
- Originally targeted ~2.95 crore houses (FY 2016–24).
- With extension (FY 2024–29), additional 2 crore houses will be built, making the cumulative target 4.95 crore.
- So far ~2.82 crore completed, ~3.85 crore sanctioned, out of ~4.12 crore allocated.
- In the last nine years, ~568 crore person-days of labour have been generated via the scheme’s linkage with rural employment programmes.
Additional Info
- Scheme Background:
- PMAY-G was launched with effect from 1st April 2016, by restructuring the previous rural housing scheme, the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY).
- The primary objective is to provide a pucca house with a minimum size of 25 sq. m., including a dedicated hygienic cooking space, to all houseless households and those living in kutcha and dilapidated houses in rural areas.
- Beneficiary Selection:
- Beneficiaries are identified and selected from a priority list created using housing deprivation parameters from the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011.
- This process ensures that assistance is targeted toward the most deprived households. The final list is also validated by the Gram Sabha to maintain transparency.
- Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY):
- Launched in 1985 as part of the Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme (RLEGP), IAY was the predecessor to PMAY-G.
- PMAY-G was designed to overcome the gaps in IAY and address the housing needs of the rural poor in a more targeted and effective manner.
