AI-Powered Liquid Crystal Sensor Identifies Snake Venom with 95% Accuracy
![]()
What’s the News?
Researchers have developed an AI-powered liquid crystal sensor capable of distinguishing between cobra and viper venom with 95% accuracy in just 4 minutes.
- The research was published in the journal Sensors and Actuators A: Physical.
- The sensor combines liquid crystal technology with deep learning to identify venom types.
- It can detect venom concentrations as low as 45 micrograms per millilitre (μg/mL).
- The technology could support faster selection of appropriate antivenom, but requires clinical validation before medical use.
How Does the AI-Powered Sensor Work?
- Liquid Crystal Sensor: Uses a textile grid impregnated with liquid crystals that change their molecular alignment upon contact with snake venom.
- Optical Detection: Venom-induced changes generate distinct optical patterns visible under a polarised optical microscope.
- AI Classification: The MobileNetV3-Large deep-learning model analyses these patterns to distinguish cobra venom from viper venom.
- Key Performance Metrics:
- Classification accuracy: 95%
- Optimal sensing time: 4 minutes
- Detection limit: 45 μg/mL
- Limitation: The results are laboratory-based and do not establish reliable identification of all snake species.
Additional Info
Snakebite Envenoming:
- Recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a priority Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD).
- India recorded an estimated 1.2 million snakebite deaths during 2000–2019, averaging approximately 58,000 annually.
India's Big Four Venomous Snakes:
- Indian Cobra (Naja naja)
- Common Krait (Bungarus caeruleus)
- Russell's Viper (Daboia russelii)
- Saw-scaled Viper (Echis carinatus)
Types of Antivenom:
- Monovalent: Targets venom from a specific snake species.
- Polyvalent: Targets venom from multiple specified snake species.
National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming (NAP-SE):
- Launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
- Aims to reduce snakebite-related deaths and disabilities by 50% by 2030.
- Adopts a One Health approach.

What’s the News?
India has initiated a National Red List Assessment of 1,211 regularly occurring bird species, including resident and migratory birds, using the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) assessment framework.
- 107 species have undergone preliminary assessments.
- Preliminary assessments of all 1,211 species are targeted for completion by 2026, with final assessments expected by 2027.
- The initiative aims to assess extinction risks and strengthen evidence-based bird conservation at the national level.
