Melioidosis in Odisha: A Rising Concern During Monsoon
- Melioidosis, a bacterial infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, has been found to peak during the monsoon season in Odisha, according to recent environmental mapping studies.
- The disease is primarily acquired through inoculation, inhalation, or ingestion of soil and water contaminated with the bacteria.
- Odisha's agricultural landscape and extreme weather events provide ample opportunities for human exposure to the bacteria.

Key Findings of the Study:
- Seasonality: Infections peak during and after the monsoon season due to favorable environmental conditions like rainfall, temperature, and humidity.
- Global Impact: South Asia, including India, contributes to 44% of the global burden of melioidosis, with an estimated 1,65,000 cases annually.
- Challenges in Diagnosis:
- The bacteria can mimic other common pathogens, leading to frequent misdiagnosis.
- Requires prolonged incubation and specialized laboratory expertise for accurate detection.
- Treatment Complexity:
- Initial intravenous therapy followed by a prolonged eradication phase of 12-20 weeks.
- Mismanagement can lead to recurrence and high fatality rates, especially in septicaemic cases.
Government and Medical Response:
- AIIMS Bhubaneswar has reported an increase in cases over the years, emphasizing the need for better diagnostic facilities and awareness campaigns.
- Focus on addressing comorbidities like diabetes and chronic renal diseases, which increase susceptibility to the disease.
About Burkholderia pseudomallei:
- Burkholderia pseudomallei is a gram-negative bacterium found in soil and water in tropical regions.
- Known for causing a wide range of symptoms, from skin infections to severe pneumonia and sepsis.
- First described over a century ago, it remains a medical enigma due to its diverse clinical manifestations.
India’s Goods Trade Deficit Hits 42-Month Low
- India’s goods trade deficit has dropped to a 42-month low of $14.05 billion in February 2025, as per data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- This improvement is attributed to a significant reduction in gold, silver, and crude oil imports.
- Imports fell to a 22-month low of $50.9 billion, while exports were valued at $36.9 billion.

Key Highlights:
- Gold and Silver Imports:
- Reduced to $2.7 billion, the lowest since June 2024.
- Crude and Petroleum Imports:
- Declined to $11.89 billion, the lowest since July 2023.
- Year-on-Year Trends:
- Exports dipped by 10.84%, partly due to the base year effect related to the leap month.
- Imports shrunk by 16.3% compared to the same period last year.
Economic Implications:
- The trade deficit was significantly lower than the average of $23 billion during the first 10 months of FY2025.
- Economists predict a current account surplus of around $5 billion in Q4 FY2025, equivalent to 0.5% of GDP.
Trade Deficit:
- A trade deficit occurs when a country’s imports exceed its exports.
- It is a critical indicator of a nation’s economic health and its dependency on foreign goods.
