Cabinet Approves ₹9,450 Crore Railway Multi-Tracking Projects Across Four States
What’s the News?
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four railway multi-tracking projects worth approximately ₹9,450 crore. Spanning about 410 km across West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, these projects are planned for completion by 2030-31. They will enhance capacity on the high-density Howrah-Chennai trunk route, improve connectivity to around 6,448 villages (population ~60 lakh), and enable an additional 76 million tonnes of annual freight traffic.
Multi-Tracking Projects?
- Overview: Multi-tracking involves adding third or fourth railway lines on existing saturated corridors to separate passenger and freight traffic, decongest routes, and boost line capacity.
- Approved Corridors:
- Kharagpur–Bhadrak (Ranital): 173 km fourth line (West Bengal & Odisha) — ₹3,352 crore
- Bhadrak–Haridaspur: 75 km fourth line (Odisha) — ₹1,583 crore
- Cuttack–Paradeep (Badabandha): 72 km third & fourth lines (Odisha) — ₹2,286 crore
- Gummidipundi–Gudur: 90 km third & fourth lines (Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu) — ₹2,229 crore
- Strategic Significance: These projects will complete quadrupling of the Howrah-Chennai trunk route, a major eastern coastal corridor carrying coal, iron ore, cement, iron & steel, containers, automobiles, and food grains.
- Tourism Connectivity: Improved rail access to Bhitarkanika National Park, Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary, Chandipur Beach, Pulicat Lake, Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary, Lalitgiri (Buddhist site), and several temples across the region.
- Implementation Framework: Planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, with integrated planning and stakeholder consultations for multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency.
Freight & Environmental Impact?
- Freight Capacity: Additional freight traffic of 76 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum), significantly decongesting existing lines and improving operational efficiency.
- Environmental Benefits:
- Reduction in oil imports by 13 crore litres
- Lower CO₂ emissions by 65 crore kg
- Equivalent to plantation of 2.6 crore trees
- Logistics Cost: Railways being an energy-efficient mode, the projects align with India’s climate goals and aim to reduce national logistics costs.
Additional Info
- Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA):
- Chaired by the Prime Minister
- Approves major economic policies and infrastructure projects
- PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan:
- Launched in October 2021
- Aims to break silos among ministries and integrate infrastructure planning for seamless multi-modal connectivity
- Howrah–Chennai Trunk Route:
- One of Indian Railways’ busiest and most saturated corridors on the eastern coast
- Connects major industrial zones and port-linked regions
- Multi-Tracking in Indian Railways:
- Third/fourth lines are added on high-density routes where existing double lines are saturated
- Separates fast passenger trains from slow-moving freight, improving punctuality and safety
