SpaDeX mission for space docking
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission on December 30, 2024.
- The mission aims to demonstrate technologies needed for spacecraft rendezvous, docking, and undocking using two small satellites.
Mission Details
- Launch Vehicle: Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C60).
- Satellites: Two small satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), each weighing about 220 kg.
- Payloads: The mission also carried 24 other innovative payloads.
- Launch Site: Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota.
- Orbit: The satellites were launched into a 475-km circular orbit.
Significance of the Mission
- Technological Advancement: Demonstrates India's capability in spacecraft rendezvous, docking, and undocking, a technology mastered by only an elite group of spacefaring nations.
- Innovation: The mission includes innovative payloads that contribute to advancements in space technology.
Additional Information
ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation
- India's National Space Agency: Founded in 1969, ISRO is responsible for India's space program.
- Focus: It conducts research and development in space science, space technology, and applications for national development.
- Achievements: ISRO has launched numerous satellites for communication, remote sensing, navigation, and scientific research, including successful missions to the Moon (Chandrayaan) and Mars (Mangalyaan).
- Global Recognition: ISRO is recognized globally for its cost-effective and successful space missions.
PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)
- Workhorse Launch Vehicle: PSLV is a reliable and versatile four-stage launch vehicle developed by ISRO.
- Purpose: It is primarily used to launch satellites into polar orbits (for Earth observation) and low Earth orbits. It can also launch satellites into geostationary transfer orbits.
- Reliability: PSLV has a high success rate and has launched numerous Indian and foreign satellites.
- Configurations: It comes in different configurations to match varying payload requirements.
SDSC (Satish Dhawan Space Centre)
- India's Primary Spaceport: Located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, SDSC is ISRO's main launch center.
- Facilities: It houses launch pads, rocket assembly facilities, tracking and telemetry stations, and other essential infrastructure for launch operations.
- Named After: It is named after Satish Dhawan, a former chairman of ISRO.
- Key Role: SDSC plays a crucial role in all of ISRO's launch missions, including PSLV and GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) launches.
